Russia: Statement by the Spokesperson on the Day of Remembrance of Victims of Political Repression

On the day of remembrance of victims of the Soviet state terror, we pay tribute to the millions of repressed and to those in Russia who, at great personal cost, are preserving their names.

The Kremlin is trying to erase the memory of the victims of Soviet terror and threatens with prosecution those who challenge the official version of the past.

There are more than 1800 political prisoners in Russia, and the number keeps growing. Political activists, human rights defenders, journalists, historians, and scientists are subject to systematic, state-sponsored internal repression. Many face inhumane conditions and torture. Alexei Navalny paid with his life.

The European Union calls for the immediate and unconditional release and effective rehabilitation of all political prisoners, including Alexei Gorinov, Ivan Safronov, Igor Baryshnikov, Maria Ponomarenko, Antonina Favorskaya, Nika Novak, Alexander Kynev and many others.
