The Embassy of Ethiopia in Brussels celebrated the 120th anniversary of the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between the governments of Ethiopia and Belgium on May 28, 2026, at the Press Club Brussels Europe, in the presence of senior officials from the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As the first in a series of events scheduled throughout 2026 to commemorate this relationship, a photo exhibition titled “Images of Friendship: 120” was officially opened.
In his opening remarks, the Ambassador of Ethiopia to Belgium, H.E. Ambassador Eshete Tilahun, highlighted the deep and historic ties between Ethiopia and Belgium. He emphasized the importance of continuing to strengthen ongoing efforts beyond formal diplomacy, focusing on trade, culture, educational cooperation, and people-to-people relations.
The Ambassador of Belgium to Ethiopia, H.E. Annelies Verstichel, delivered a video message underscoring the vital importance of strengthening the partnership and people-to-people connections between the two nations.
The Guest of Honor, H.E. Hubert Roisin, Head of Cabinet for the Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, and International Cooperation, delivered a speech marking the occasion. He reaffirmed Belgium’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Ethiopia across various sectors. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Head of African Affairs and the Chief of Protocol were also in attendance.
During the event, Mr. Tim Ianna presented a piece titled “The Tale of Two Lions,” which commemorates the historical relations between Ethiopia and Belgium. This was followed by a video presentation showcasing key official visits and milestone events in the bilateral history.
The highlight of the day was the opening of the “Images of Friendship: 120” photography exhibition, which illustrates the partnership and history between Ethiopia and Belgium. The exhibition was jointly inaugurated by the Guest of Honor and the Head of Mission, after which it was toured by the attendees.
